25 years in, referral-only, still hands-on.
I started in 2001. The web was less complicated then, but the underlying problem was the same: businesses needed technology to work reliably, and there weren’t enough people who could make that happen without introducing new problems in the process.
I ran the development team at Riverside County IT (enterprise applications bureau), where the systems touched tens of thousands of people and downtime wasn’t acceptable. That work built a deep familiarity with what it takes to build and maintain infrastructure at scale. I’ve been working across the LAMP stack since before it had that name, held a Microsoft partner designation for two decades, and have spent most of my career doing IT consulting for small and mid-size businesses throughout Southern California. The kind of work that tends to happen after someone else’s solution didn’t hold up.
Mind Set Technologies: Co-Founder & CTO
In 2012, I co-founded Mind Set Technologies and served as CTO, building the complete clinical software for a telemedicine-based tinnitus treatment platform in collaboration with UCI clinical specialists. The core technology was built from scratch: a band-pass filter algorithm in C, ported to Adobe Alchemy, generating all clinical audio locally in the browser without streaming. The work received NIH SBIR Phase I funding (grant 1R43DC012498-01, $99,730, National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders). I built the system to the clinical specifications and contributed to the technical documentation that became part of the patent record.
TrailAware: Founder
I’m an avid mountain biker, and a problem I ran into on the trail led directly to the concept behind TrailAware, a trail safety and geospatial awareness platform. I conceived the company and the technology, then brought in co-founders to build it out. The geospatial patent is in my name.
How the work is structured
I keep a deliberately small roster. A maximum of three to four active engagements at any time, typically one in planning, one in active development, and one in deployment and QC. That’s not a capacity constraint, it’s how quality gets maintained. Every client gets direct senior access at every stage, not a handoff after the contract is signed.
A common concern with this model is continuity: what happens if the person you depend on is unavailable? I address this directly: everything gets documented, infrastructure is reproducible, and systems are designed so your team can understand and operate what gets built. You own what gets built. Not a black box, not tribal knowledge that walks out the door. That’s how a single senior operator can work at this scale without a team behind them.
Not every engagement is a retainer. One-off and standalone projects are part of the mix. Interesting problems from interesting companies are worth taking, and short-term work regularly turns into something longer.
The clients that fit best tend to be established regional operators: manufacturers, distributors, retailers, service businesses, whose technology hasn’t kept pace with how the business actually runs today. Real problems, real budgets, direct answers. The engagements that work best usually start with a problem, not a project.
Background
25 years of direct technical work across enterprise IT, LAMP stack development, cloud infrastructure, and custom web applications for regional businesses throughout SoCal. A geospatial patent. A track record built entirely on referrals.
Career Highlights
Started in 2001. First client came from a job board posting, a medical practice that needed a website. Referrals from there. 350+ sites and systems over 25 years, never a dollar spent on marketing.
Early multichannel ecommerce integration. Built one of the first cross-channel ecommerce systems for an automotive accessories company, syncing products and inventory between the website and eBay store with checkout working in both directions, using a custom Zoovy integration. Nobody else was doing this at the time. More referrals from automotive ecommerce companies followed.
Drupal era: 70–80 builds across a decade. Manufacturers, retailers, ecommerce companies, real estate portals, investment platforms, government systems, title company auditing tools, foster care tracking. Included white-label work building the entire San Manuel Casino website framework in Drupal, on their existing SQL Server infrastructure, which required working outside Drupal’s standard database layer.
Mind Set Technologies: Co-Founder & CTO (2012). Built the core tinnitus diagnostic and therapy platform from scratch: band-pass filter algorithm in C, ported to Adobe Alchemy (alpha, no documentation), running entirely in the browser with no streaming. UCI clinical collaboration. NIH SBIR Phase I funded (grant 1R43DC012498-01). Technical architecture and documentation contributed to the patent record.
Riverside County IT: Enterprise Applications Bureau. Interviewed 42 county departments for GAP requirements analysis. Took over a ServiceNow implementation that had been rolled out by someone else and failed. Led the entire re-implementation successfully. Government-scale enterprise IT.
TrailAware. Founded a trail safety and geospatial technology startup. The idea came from a problem encountered on the trail. Conceived the entire company and technology, brought in co-founders to build it out. Patent held in my name. See trailaware.com.
Last 18 months: AI automation. Replaced 12 offshore workers with AI pipelines over 18 months. Now doing the same for clients: assessment, pipeline build, training, and transition. Production systems, not demos.
